Frog Care
Coast Galleries wants to help you keep your remarkable wearable works of art looking new and shiny. And, as much as you might want to, we recommend that you don’t sleep in your frogtastic jewels.
General Care
Keep your jewelry free of dirt, cosmetics, hair spray, perfume, and perspiration. Avoid salt water and harsh chemicals such as chlorine or detergents which can harm gold, silver and gemstones. After wearing, wipe your jewelry with a clean, soft damp cloth. This will enhance the luster and assure that your jewelry is clean before being stored. Never use toothpaste!
Care of Gemstones
Natural colored gemstones are often treated to improve their appearance, using traditional jewelry industry practices. These treatments are permanent and require no special care. The following information will help ensure that your colored gemstones remain beautiful for years to come:
- Never use commercial cleaning solutions. Use only a soft cloth and lukewarm water.
- Don’t boil or use hot water for cleaning.
Care of Gold
- Remove before bathing, swimming or using any chemicals. Soap can leave a dulling film; chemicals such as chlorine or cleaning solutions can cause damage.
- For a light cleaning, use a diluted solution of a mild liquid detergent in lukewarm water, a soft cloth or baby toothbrush. To remove grease or oil, dip into plain rubbing alcohol.
Care of Pearls
Cultured pearls are precious jewels and should be treated with care. They’re also the products of living creatures, frog friends! Cultured pearls are formed when an irritant is introduced into a mollusk. The mollusk secretes a substance called nacre, covering the irritant, producing a pearl. Nacre gives pearls their rainbow of colors and luster, but is relatively soft compared to other gemstones and metals.
- Perfumes and cosmetics contain chemicals that can dull the luster of a pearl over time. To avoid this, put your pearl jewelry on after applying any makeup, perfume and hair spray.
- Wipe your pearls with a soft damp cloth after removing to ensure they remain clean and free of damage.
- Do not clean cultured pearls with any chemicals, abrasives or solvents. These substances can damage your pearls.
- A pearl’s surface is soft and can be scratched by hard metal edges or gemstones.
- Place cultured pearl jewelry in a soft pouch or compartmentalized jewelry box.
Care of Sterling Silver
- Never wear your sterling silver jewelry while swimming in chlorinated water, as the chlorine may cause discoloration of the metal.
- As with other fine jewelry, exposure to any chemicals may damage the finish.
- Clean your silver jewelry with a mild soap and water solution, allowing the water to bead up, and then pat dry with a soft cloth.
- Exposure to light and air will naturally cause silver to tarnish. For touch up polishing, use a cloth or mitt specially designed to remove tarnish without scratching the silver.
- Store your silver jewelry in a cool dry place, in a compartmentalized jewelry box or pouch to prevent it from being scratched by other jewelry.
